Attic Insulation Removal In Bradford, Ontario
Attic insulation removal vacuums out damp, mouldy, flattened or rodent-fouled insulation, leaving a bare floor ready for sealing and fresh insulation. Attic insulation removal is the right first step when the old layer can no longer do its job.
Attic Insulation Removal details
When Attic Insulation Removal Is Needed
Most newer attics never need attic insulation removal, because a top-up over a dry layer works well. Taking it out pays off in four cases.
Case one is insulation soaked by a roof leak or melting ice at the eaves. Case two is mould on the sheathing or in the fill. Case three is droppings and nests left by mice, squirrels or raccoons. Case four is an older attic packed with several mixed layers that can no longer be sealed from above.
How Attic Insulation Removal Works
A vacuum truck parks at the curb, and a wide hose is routed through the house up to the hatch. Floors and walls along that route are covered first.
Old fill rides the hose out to sealed bags on the truck, and none of it crosses your floors by hand. With the joists bare, we sweep up the last of the debris and photograph the empty ceiling. It is the best chance you will get to see every gap.
Sealing The Ceiling After Attic Insulation Removal
An empty attic is the easiest attic to seal. With the old fill gone, every wire hole, wall top and light housing is in plain sight, and we close them all before new material arrives. The attic is then blown back up to R-60, as described on the blown-in attic insulation page.
Vermiculite Gets A Lab Test First
Vermiculite looks like small, shiny, greyish-brown or gold pebbles, and it turns up in some older attics around Schomberg and Bond Head. Some batches contain asbestos, so if we spot it, nothing is touched until a lab tests a sample.
When the result shows asbestos, an abatement contractor clears the attic under Ontario's asbestos regulation, and we come back afterward to seal and insulate. When the result is clear, attic insulation removal is quoted the usual way.
What Attic Insulation Removal Costs
Attic insulation removal plus new blown-in fill typically costs $3.10 to $5.40 per square foot. Where an attic insulation removal job lands in that range comes down to how deep the old layer is, how much cleanup the joists need and how easy the hatch is to reach.

Pair This With Another Attic Job
A typical Bradford attic combines a couple of these on one visit.
-
Blown-In Attic Insulation
Blown-in attic insulation spreads one unbroken layer across the attic floor, eave to eave, and reaches R-60 at the right depth. It suits empty attics, patchy batts and any floor with open joist bays.
-
Attic Insulation Top-Up
With an attic insulation top-up, fresh fill is blown on top of the layer you already have until a thin or sunken attic floor reaches R-60. Dry, clean material underneath is left right where it lies.
-
New Home Attic Insulation Upgrade
A new home attic insulation upgrade takes the minimum layer a builder left and builds it up to R-60, fixing the eaves, the hatch and the ceiling holes as it goes. For most newer Bradford houses it is the first upgrade worth doing.
-
Attic Air Sealing
Attic air sealing shuts the holes in your ceiling where heated air slips into the attic, from recessed lights and fan boxes to the hatch. It is step one on every insulation job we take.
-
Attic Ventilation
Good attic ventilation draws cold, dry air through the soffits and releases it up near the ridge, which keeps the roof deck dry through the winter. We look at attic ventilation in every attic, because new insulation must never block it.
-
Attic Insulation Rebate
Ontario's attic insulation rebate covers part of the cost of raising an attic to R-50 under Home Renovation Savings, a program Enbridge Gas runs jointly with Save on Energy. Below is what it pays, who can apply and how contractors fit in, last checked October 2026.
